Hyundai Sonata Canada



The Hyundai Sonata is a full sized sedan manufactured by Hyundai Motors since 1985, the first Sonata in Canada was a mid-sized sedan, making it an optional upgrade from the compact Hyundai Excel which was later replaced by the Hyundai Accent. The Sonata was sold in Canada as the Hyundai Stellar in 1985, while the second generation arrived in 1987, Hyundai brought on Giorgetto Giugiaro to redesign the new Sonata, Giugiaro was the lead designer behind the BMW M1 concept, Mazda Familia and Volkswagen Passat., he was named Car Designer of the Century in 1999, Hyundai employed Giugiaro while designed the Hyundai Pony, Excel and Sonata. The redesigned Sonata was built in Bromont, Quebec and was powered by a Mitsubishi engineered 1.8L SOHC engine, the 1988 Sonata shares the platform with the Mitsubishi Galant which includes an optional 2.4L engine, the 1990 Sonata in Canada and the US replaced the 2.4L engine for an upgraded 2.0L engine shared with the Mitsubishi Eclipse.

The third generation Sonata was released in 1994 as a 1995 Sonata model, the new design grew in size and received a standard 2.0L engine with an optional 3.0L V6 Mitsubishi engine, After the Hyundai Motors assembly plant in Bromont, Quebec closed in 1994 after a failed merger with Chrysler, the Hyundai moved production of the Sonata back to Korea. The third generation Sonata added some premium features like GPS navigation systems, CD multi-changer and sunroof to begin competing with other full sized sedans. The fourth generation Sonata was redesigned trying to distinguish itself from the mid-sized Hyundai Elantra, the 1998 Sonata shares the same platform with the Kia Optima, later Hyundai used the same platform and engine with their first internationally marketed SUV the Hyundai Santa Fe. The 2002-2005 Sonata in Canada received a mid-generation facelift, with a new front bumper and headlights, it also added a 2.7L DOHC V6 engine with 173HP, this new model broke sales records in the US and Canada, competing directly with the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima.

The fifth generation Hyundai Sonata was unveiled in August 2004 in Korea but didn't arrive to Canada until 2006, Hyundai began production of the Sonata at their new assembly plant in Montgomery, Alabama, where it also manufactures the Hyundai Santa Fe. This new generation is designed using a new platform which changed category to the full-sized sedan. The 2006 Hyundai Sonata is powered by a 2.4L Theta engine with 175HP which it shares with the crossover SUV Hyundai Tucson and an optional V6 3.3L Lambda engine with 249HP which is shared by the Hyundai Sorento SUV. The 2006 Hyundai Sonata was named Best New Family Car (under $35,000) by the Canadian Car of the Year Awards, while the 2099 Sonata received the Best Redesign award including the best interior design.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata made headlines with a fresh revolutionized design, significantly upgrading the exterior lines and turning it into a top seller, it was Top Safety Pick by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and received a five start rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it was also named top of it's class in the Vehicle Satisfaction Awards beating our the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. In 2011 the Hyundai Sonata more than doubled its sales from previous years. The 2014 Sonata in Canada is available in three configurations, with a 2.4L 16-valve DOHC with Dual CVVT engine, a performance 2.0T turbocharged 16-valve engine with dual CVVT. While the Hyundai Sonata hybrid model is powered by a Theta 2.4L engine with a lithium-polymer battery powered electric motor with an average fuel economy of 5.1L/100km. All three share the same platform (modified platform for the hybrid model) they include Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control System (TCS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD). The Sonata has an optional Navigation Package which ads high-resolution touchscreen GPS navigation system with voice activation and a back-up camera while the Limited trim includes sunroof and 6-speed Automatic Transmission with SHIFTRONIC.
